Art & Brain Week, a unique collaboration between the ELSC at the Hebrew University and the Jerusalem Cinematheque, will take place as part of the international “Brain Awareness Week.”

Brain Awareness Week, which is celebrated annually in March, raises public awareness of the importance of brain research and presents research advances in the field. ELSC’s Art & Brain Week promotes this goal while strengthening the relationship between community and academia.

The ninth Art & Brain Week will take place on March 24-30, 2019. Every evening during the week special scientific events will be held at the Jerusalem Cinematheque, Israel Museum and Beit Avi Chai. Each event will include a lecture by a leading scientist followed by a movie or cultural content related to the lecture topic.

• On Sunday, March 24, the audience will be invited to a multi-sensory and culinary journey. The event will begin with a lecture about the sense of taste given by chef Avner Niv and his wife, Prof. Masha Niv, combining an exciting tasting experience. After the lecture the movie “Quanto Basta” will be shown.
• On Monday, March 25, Dr. Naomi Habib will give a talk about Alzheimer’s disease, followed by the touching movie “The Leisure Seeker.”
• On Tuesday, March 26, a special event will be held at The Israel Museum, in which Tanya Sirakovich, the curator of the exhibition “Victory Over the Sun,” and the brain researcher Prof. Shaul Hochstein will discuss the links between art and the brain.
• On Wednesday, March 27, Dr. Shir Atzil will give a lecture about synchrony and pleasure, followed by a singalong event where the audience will be invited to sing the songs of Queen in the highly acclaimed film “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
• On Thursday, March 28, at Beit Avi Chai, a multi-disciplinary discussion on “Man and Machine” will be held, featuring Prof. Asa Kasher, Dr. Oren Shriki and Rabbi Yuval Cherlow, and moderated by Emily Amrusi. At the same time, in the Jerusalem Cinematheque, an event dedicated to child brain development will be held. The talk will be given by Dr. Tzipi Horowitz-Kraus, followed by the movie “Three Identical Strangers.”
• On Friday, March 29, an event “Friday at Ten” will be held at the Jerusalem Cinematheque at 22:00 (Entrance – 10 Shekels, Beer – 10 Shekels, Popcorn – 10 Shekels) in which Doron Fishler will host four young brain researchers in an evening of science, humor and cinema.
• On Saturday, March 30, there will be an event for the younger audience (ages 7-14), which will include a children’s lecture on artificial intelligence and the movie “Ralph Breaks the Internet.”

Additionally, starting March 20, the unique exhibition “Etchings from the Brain” will be presented at the Jerusalem Cinematheque. The exhibition is inspired by an exciting three-day meeting between brain researchers and leading artists, and will be open until April 14.

Every evening, before the lecture and film, students from different laboratories in ELSC will present their latest discoveries in the field of brain research in the Cinematheque lobby.

Brain Awareness Week 2019 – Program
