Mini-workshop by Dr. Ben Inglis

Chief physicist, UC Berkeley Brain Imaging Center

Friday, February 22nd, 9:30-14:30

Dr. Ben Inglis is the chief physicist and the main force behind the UC Berkeley Brain Imaging Center. He is an expert in MRI data acquisition specifically in the context of functional MRI.

While most courses, textbooks, and articles on fMRI concentrate on data post-processing and statistics, getting the best possible data is a prerequisite for any successful research. Dr. Inglis’ blog “practiCal fMRI: the nuts & bolts” has been an invaluable resource for cognitive neuroscientists striving to get the best possible results from their scanners.

Dr. Inglis will give a workshop on data acquisition for fMRI. While it assumes some basic knowledge of MRI, it is directed at the neuroscientist user level.

MEETING SCHEDULE

9:30-10:00 – Gathering, coffee

10:00-11:30 – A framework for setting up fMRI protocols on your scanner

11:30-12:00 – Break, coffee, refreshments

12:00 – 14:00 – Citius, Altius, Fortius: What limits spatial and temporal resolution of fMRI at 3 T, and how can we set new records?

Dr. Inglis will be the guest of the ELSC neuroimaging unit.

Here are a few links for refreshing the non-physicist understanding of MRI basics:

An animated course on MRI (nice animations, requires a free registration)

The FMRIB course (pay special attention to pulse sequences class)

Miki Lustig’s introduction lecture (general intro to neuroimaging, with MRI towards the end)

This workshop was made possible through the generous funding of the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.
