The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has started teaching its first course in partnership with Coursera, which provides free online courses from senior lecturers at the world’s leading universities. The course, Synapses, Neurons and Brains, will acquaint students with the human brain’s functioning and basic components, exciting aspects of current brain research, and the future of brain research. The nine-week course, which began on May 31, is taught by Prof. Idan Segev of the Hebrew University’s Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences.
Approximately 40,000 students from around the world registered for the course, including students from Lebanon, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, India, Azerbaijan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco and Algeria, as well as Europe, South America, the United States, Australia and New Zealand.
“The course incorporates an active forum where students are invited to ask questions and there are active discussions. Students come from different backgrounds some without any prior knowledge in the field of brain research,” said Guy Eyal, a moderator from the Hebrew University. “The most interesting thing is the number of students coming from dozens of different countries all over the world. This is really globalization at its best,” said Eyal.
According to Prof. Idan Segev, “We are in a unique moment in the study of the brain, as Europe and the U.S. have just announced huge projects costing billions of dollars to advance our understanding of both healthy and diseased brains.” Professor Segev is a partner in the giant Human Brain Project that was recently granted one billion Euros by the European Union.
In addition to the course on brain science, other courses will soon be offered by Hebrew University faculty including Prof. Yaakov Nahmias, director of the Center for Bioengineering, and Prof. Jonathan Garb, the 2010 recipient of the Hebrew University President’s Prize for Outstanding Researcher, who teaches at the Department of Jewish Thought at the Mandel Institute of Jewish Studies. Dr. Yuval Noah Harari will also offer a course on Coursera.
In September 2012 the Hebrew University announced it would partner with Coursera, joining leading U.S. and international universities to make quality content available outside the classroom. The initiative will enable millions of people worldwide to learn from Hebrew University faculty who are leaders in their fields. The Hebrew University is the only Israeli university in the program, alongside partners such as Caltech (California Institute of Technology), Johns Hopkins University, Princeton University and Stanford University.

סטודנטים מלבנון, ערב הסעודית, מלזיה, אירן ופקיסטן לומדים על מוח האדם באוניברסיטה העברית

לקורס נרשמו כ-40 אלף סטודנטים מכל רחבי העולם כולל סטודנטים מלבנון, אירן ערב הסעודית, נפאל, הודו, אזרבאיג’ן, מלזיה, פקיסטן, אוזבקיסטן, קירגיסטאן, מרוקו, אלג’ריה וכמובן מדינות אירופה, ארה”ב, דרום אמריקה, אוסטרליה וניו זילנד.
“הקורס מנהל פורום פעיל בו הסטודנטים מוזמנים לשאול שאלות ומתקיימים דיונים פעילים. הסטודנטים מגיעים מרקעים שונים – חלקם ללא ידע מוקדם בכלל בתחום חקר המוח”, מספר גיא אייל, מתרגל הקורס ומנהל הפורום מטעם האוניברסיטה העברית. “הדבר המעניין ביותר הוא כמות הסטודנטים שמגיעים מעשרות מדינות שונות על פני כל הגלובוס. זו ממש הגלובליזציה במיטבה”, מוסיף אייל.
לדברי פרופ’ עידן שגב “אנו נמצאים בתקופה ייחודית בחקר המוח. אירופה וארה”ב הכריזו על מיזמי ענק בעלות של מיליארדי דולרים במטרה לקדם את הבנת המוח הן הבריא והן החולה”. פרופ’ שגב שותף במיזם הענק human brain project שזכה לאחרונה במענק של מיליארד יורו מטעם האיחוד האירופי.
האוניברסיטה העברית חתמה לפני מספר חודשים על הסכם שיתוף פעולה עם חברת קורסרה (Coursera) המציעה קורסים מקוונים ללא עלות מפי מרצים בכירים מהאוניברסיטאות המובילות בעולם. היוזמה מאפשרת למיליוני אנשים מכל קצוות תבל ללמוד ממרצי האוניברסיטה העברית שנמצאים בחוד החנית של תחומם. האוניברסיטה העברית היא המוסד האקדמי היחיד מישראל במיזם, שבו שותפים מוסדות מובילים בעולם כגון Caltech, ג’ון הופקינס, פרינסטון, דיוק וסטנפורד.
קורסרה הוקמה ב-2011 כמיזם של שני חוקרים מאוניברסיטת סטנפורד שבארה”ב דפני קולר (שהיא, אגב, בוגרת האוניברסיטה העברית) ואנדרו נג. כיום מציע האתר מעל 200 קורסים לתואר ראשון ושני, של 62 מוסדות אקדמיים גבוהים ברחבי העולם, במגוון רחב של תחומי לימוד, בין היתר רפואה, ספרות, היסטוריה ומדעי המחשב באתר מקוון https://www.coursera.org/. בנוסף להרצאות המקוונות, הקורסים כוללים גם מטלות קריאה, משימות בית, קבוצות דיון ומבחנים. נכון להיום לומדים בקורסים השונים למעלה מ-3 מיליון סטודנטים מ-190 מדינות.
בנוסף לקורס על המוח שכבר נפתח, ייפתחו בקרוב קורסים של ראש התכנית לביו-הנדסה פרופ’ יעקב נחמיאס, וחתן פרס נשיא האוניברסיטה לחוקר מצטיין לשנת 2010 פרופ’ יהונתן גארב מהמכון למדעי היהדות ע”ש מנדל. גם ד”ר יובל נח הררי יעביר בקרוב קורס בקורסרה.
