“Let us join hands in research”: President Rivlin Visits ELSC.
ELSC had the honor of hosting the President of the State of Israel, Mr. Reuven Rivlin, on Thursday, June 18, 2020. President Rivlin was accompanied by Prof. Asher Cohen, the president of the Hebrew University; Ambassador Yossi Gal, the vice president for advancement and external relations; and Prof. Israel Nelken, the co-director of ELSC.
President Rivlin visited the labs of Prof. Leon Deouell and Dr. Naomi Habib, where he learned about their research and the latest developments in neuroscience. He also was briefed on the contribution of the Hebrew University and ELSC to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Talking to ELSC researchers, President Rivlin stressed the need of unifying institutions that are working on a treatment to the pandemic. “We need the abilities of each lab,” he said. “We must unify the labs so they work together and become one force. I have no doubt that the government should create an organization that will include all the institutions that work to fight the coronavirus. This organization is critical. It will make the State of Israel a leader in the treatment of the pandemic, especially if more waves are to follow.”
Prof. Cohen stated that “we presented today to the President of the State of Israel, a Hebrew University alumnus, a small portion of the groundbreaking research that is conducted at the university. The science and research conducted in Israel in general and in Jerusalem in particular are the pride of Israel and what drives the Israeli economy to be front and center in the world when it comes to innovation. The COVID-19 crisis reflects the importance of scientific research in Israel and around the world, as well as the need to invest money in its promotion.”

“תנו יד למחקר משותף”
ביום חמישי, 18.6.20 התארח ב-ELSC נשיא המדינה, ראובן (רובי) רבלין. הנשיא סייר במרכז בליווי נשיא האוניברסיטה העברית, פרופ’ אשר כהן, סגן הנשיא לקשרי חוץ יוסי גל ודירקטור ELSC פרופ’ ישראל נלקן.
הנשיא ביקר במעבדותיהם של פרופ’ ליאון דעואל וד”ר נעמי חביב ולמד מהם על הנעשה במעבדותיהם ועל הגילויים האחרונים בתחום חקר המוח. כמו כן, נחשף הנשיא לתרומת חוקרי המרכז והאוניברסיטה העברית למאבק בנגיף הקורונה.
בשיחתו עם החוקרים, הדגיש הנשיא את הצורך באיחוד גופי המחקר העוסקים במציאת חיסון ומרפא לקורונה וביקש את התגייסותה של הממשלה למען הבאת כל הגורמים הללו לפעולה משותפת תחת גג ואחריות אחת: “אנחנו זקוקים ליכולות הטמונות בכל מעבדה ומעבדה. ועלינו לאגד אותן לכדי אגרוף אחד הפועל יחד. אין לי כל ספק כי הממשלה צריכה להקים את הגוף שיאגד את כל המוסדות והמערכות הפועלים למען מאבק בקורונה. זהו איחוד קריטי לא רק מבחינה רגולוטורית. איחוד כזה יהפוך את מדינת ישראל למורה נבוכים של הטיפול במגיפה, בוודאי אם נכונו לנו גלים נוספים שלה”
נשיא האוניברסיטה העברית פרופ’ אשר כהן אמר: “הצגנו לנשיא המדינה, בוגר האוניברסיטה העברית, חלק קטן מהמחקרים פורצי הדרך שמתבצעים באוניברסיטה. המחקר והמדע המתקיימים בישראל ובירושלים בפרט, הינם גאווה ישראלית והגורמים שמניעים את כלכלת ישראל לקדמת החדשנות והיזמות העולמית. משבר הקורונה מחדד מאוד את חשיבות המחקר המדעי ותוצריו בישראל ובעולם ואת הצורך בהשקעת משאבים לקידומו.”
