Establishing shared memories from the experience of mixed populations

Machine learning distills information from over-extended learning session; theoretical models of neural computation envisage one-shot learning, but usually from pre-chewed, standardized data they can deal with. The hippocampal formation, however, has to form memories on the fly from rough, unpolished experience. I will review recent evidence on mixed selectivity (work by Davide Spalla, with C Boccara), the need for hippocampal involvement (work by Kwang Il Ryom, with E Ciaramelli) and the challenge it poses to spatial memory formation (work by Francesca Schönsberg, with R Monasson).
