A. Course of Study

1. Program: 

The Required Courses are divided into 5 Topics:


Physiology (76900 and 76901)

Research Techniques (76905)

Theoretical Neuroscience (76908 and 76909) 

Cognition (76913 and 76993)

Learning and Information (76915)





First Year Requirements:

  1. Supplementary Required Courses are compulsory for all students of the program, unless the student is exempted by the courses’ teachers.
  2. Supplementary Elective Courses are highly advisable – the student should discuss them with the Head of the Program during Orientation Day. 



Second Year Requirements:

  1. Required Courses as stated in the table above.
  2. At the beginning of the second year, it is highly advisable that you find an advisor and start working on a research proposal. 
  3. During third semester, students are required to find PhD advisor.
  4. At the end of the second year (typically a week before the beginning of the third year), students will present their M.Sc. Seminar. There, each student is required to present a small research project. Often this project is done as part of the Ph.D. 



Third Year Requirements:

1. In order to register as doctoral student (Stage A), each student is required to take the Qualification Exam.

2. Fellowship from the third year is contingent upon students' transition to Stage A.

Fourth Year and above Requirements:

  1. It is advisable to transfer from Stage A to Stage B within 18 months.
  2. In order to register as Stage B student. Each student will present his/her Research to a PhD committee, which includes the student’s advisor.
  3. The committee will send its decision to the Authority for Research Students, which will approve Stage B status. With this confirmation, the MSc diploma will be granted.
  4. Fellowship from the fourth year is contingent upon completing all Required Courses.
  5. Fellowship from the fifth year is contingent upon completing all required credit pointes.



Additional Points:

  1. The total required credit points is 54.5 (only one course without grade is allowed and up to 7 credit points from Supplementary Required Courses).
  2. Passing grades: 
  • Passing grade in Supplementary Required Courses is 80.
  • Passing grade in Required Courses is average 80 in each  of the five Topics: 

Physiology (76900 and 76901)
Research Techniques (76905)
Theoretical Neuroscience (76908 and 76909) 
Cognition (76913 and 76993)
Learning Information (76915)

  • Passing grade in all other courses is 60. 

  3.  Students are encouraged to do research project in at least two labs (one of them can be their PhD lab). In order to receive academic credit for these projects, students should register to Lab Rotation course (76922). Registration can also be done after completing the projects.

  4.  Students who start the program master's degree: 
       . Please register as Preliminary Research Student at the Authority for Research Studies.
       . The total of 54.5 credit points does not apply. You are only required to take the Required Courses and the Supplementary Required courses.
       . You are not required to take the Qualification Exam. 

B . Annual Retreat 

Each year, students and researchers gather for an exciting three-day conference.

The conference includes talks by world-renowned researchers, panels by ELSC researchers, student presentations, hikes and social activities.  


C. Travel Grants:

ELSC students are welcome to apply for generous travel grants.



ELSC encourages and supports the participation of first and second year students in the Israel Society for Neuroscience (ISFN) conference.


E. Scholarships:

ELSC offers stipends and tuition scholarships for 5 years, subject to funding regulations.
