at ELSC: Becker Auditorium, Goodman Brain Sciences Bldg.,

The complement system is a part of the innate immune system conventionally known for its ability to protect the host against pathogens. Recent research findings, however, show that complement has other important functions, in particular in the brain. The talkwill discuss the emerging concepts of functions and mechanisms through which the complement system sculpts the brain during development and how it can modulate the responses of brain cells after brain injury. It will also highlight recent findings from the Pekna lab pointing to the complement system as a target for therapies aiming at improvingrecovery after ischemic stroke or perinatal asphyxia.
